KINGS COUNTY DISTILLERY: Oated Bourbon, Aged 5 Years

64.2% abv, 200ml Bottle

A note from Drammers Club: THIS is really something rare. An oated bourbon, the only oated bourbon that Kings County Distillery has made in their first 10 years of distilling. If you’re wondering what an “oated bourbon” means, here’s the quick rundown: by definition bourbon has be majority corn, and usually it’s overwhelmingly the majority (70%+), so us bourbon nerds tend to focus on the next biggest grain in the mashbill, sometimes referred to as the “flavor grain”. Normally that would be a rye, that makes it a little spicier, and sometimes it’s a wheated bourbon which makes it a little smoother (Pappy Van Winkle and Makers Mark being the 2 most famous wheated bourbons). But an oated bourbon is very rare, and it’s even more rare that it’s done right and tastes as good as this. To our knowledge, the only comparable one as of the time we selected this cask was when Buffalo Trace released an experimental oated bourbon many years ago, long since sold out.

We selected this during an online distillery tour and tasting on April 24, 2020, and you can watch that video at Drammers.com under our Video Library tab. That day we selected 7 barrels in all, 3 of them single casks like this one, and also a 4 barrel blend!). As for the small bottle size (200ml), the reason is because this was matured in a fairly small barrel, so we had it bottled in 200ml bottles so more of our members would have a chance to try it before it sold out.
