LEOPOLD BROS. - Michigan Tart Cherry Liqueur

For over twenty years, Leopold Bros has been sourcing the same famous Michigan Montmorency cherries from the same farming co-op in Traverse City. These cherries are renowned for the tartness of their flavor and the notes of marzipan and vanilla that come from their pits. Before moving to Denver, our distillery was originally located in Ann Arbor, where Montmorency cherries were a part of a Fall tradition in Michigan that included local bakeries and restaurants. Their heady flavors were celebrated in a number of cakes, pies, jams, preserves and other seasonal delights. Our goal when creating the Michigan Tart Cherry Liqueur was to figure out the best way to capture that essence in a bottle. To do this, we keep the production process is as simple as possible. We juice the cherries, mix that juice with our in-house spirit (made 100% from scratch by us, never purchased), and add a touch of cane sugar— nothing more. For us personally, sipping the Tart Cherry Liqueur neat is a nostaligia-generating journey that reminds us of all the wonderful times we had living and working in Michigan. Yet, even for those new to the beauty of Montmorency cherries, there’s a delicious dichotomy of tartness and sweetness that plays beautifully in a number of cocktail recipes, especially in sours.
