Port Askaig - Cask Strength
Islay Single Malt
Independent Bottling. This brand is owned by the team at Elixir (the same team who are building the new distillery on Islay “Portintruan”). The name comes from one of the two ports on Islay where you can catch a ferry to the mainland, this one nestled on the Northern edge of the Island, mere minutes from the island of Jura, and near the Caol Ila distillery. In our experience here at DRINQY.com, most of the Port Askaig releases are unnamed Caol Ila distillate, though we have no way of knowing for sure that’s what’s on offer on this release, it’s a pretty safe bet to assume so. Once you realize that, this is one heck of a deal for whisky that old.
From the brand: No more than 60 casks will make up each batch. Each cask is selected for the notes it will bring to the whisky. Each batch will have a unique code and show the cask breakdown which enables the recipient, each year, to contrast, compare and explore the different notes that the wood and blending brings to this Islay Scotch Whisky.
THE TASTE
As natural as it comes. As each batch will be bottled at cask strength and the cask recipe will change, every year the taste will vary; bringing complex flavors to enjoy. The 2023 batch uses the cask selection to create layers of sweetness, zest intertwined with the classic smoke of Islay.
